On Friday our 3rd team playing in the Fuller League had the same result as the previous week – Ken Smith drawing on board one, Lee Brockwell winning on board two, Sarah playing a hard fought game but going down on board three and Keith Thompson picking up a win on board four.
The evening started well with Ken Smith (115) – playing on board 1 – with a quick draw in only 15 moves with Lee Phillips (126). Lee Brockwell playing on board 2 (109) had an excellent win over Phil Wheeler (116) this week. Then Keith Thompson (93) had what one may say was a lucky win against Tom Peautells (98) when Tom left his rook en-prix which Keith duly took with a check and Tom resigned (see attached games).
Our newest member of the team – Sarah Walker-Buckton (97) – fought well after a bad opening blunder which left her a rook down for the remainder of the match against Joe Martin (99), doing well to take her match into an end game again. She only resigned when Joe had a much superior endgame and passed pawns which Sarah could not stop.
Sidcup’s Intro Cup team played their third match of the 2014/15 season on Wednesday 19 November and registered a good 3-1 win against a young team from Eynford.
Mark Lenette checkmated his opponent on board three followed closely by Phil Broughton a few seconds later on board four. Ken Smith fought hard but
unfortunately lost to his opposite number on board one. Sarah Walker-Buckton played a very evenly matched game on board two and managed to turn the game in her favour in the last half-a-dozen moves to force a resignation from her opponent.
This match marked the first win for the team this season, having drawn and lost the two previous ties. It was also Sarah’s first win for the club.
Last Thursday, our Fuller team started the same way as they finish off last season with a good win playing away to Gravesend 5.
The evening started well with Ken Smith (115) playing on board 1 and whom could not quite replicate his good win at the end of last season managing a draw with Lee Phillips (126).
Lee Brockwell (playing on board 2) (109) never looked like losing after coming out of the opening with a very strong central pawn formation and had a good win over Peter Belka (119) (See attached game).
Then Keith Thompson (93) played a strong game and was never in any serious trouble when his opponent – Paul Loadsby (76) – made blunders on move 17 and 18 and allowed Keith to trap his Knight on the edge of the board. From then on, it was only a question of time when Keith wanted to take this Knight, managing to finish the game with a win after losing a won position for the Harvey team a few weeks ago (see attached games).
Our newest member of the team – Sarah Walker-Buckton (97) – fought well and went down against the astute John Fowers (115) only resigning when John had a much superior endgame and passed pawns which Sarah could not stop.
