The Harvey Cup team lost its semi-final match against Snodland. The three bottom boards lost fairly quickly leaving the top three boards needing to win all their games to win the match on tie-break. Ian and Dave did win, but in the last game to finish Gary had to accept a draw offer in a technically drawn endgame which his opponent could not lose. Congratulations to Dave for going through the season unbeaten for the second season running.
The Harvey Cup team finished the regular season with a draw against a very strong Lewisham side on exactly the maximum average grade and also including a 10 year old who had jumped 26 grading points in the January grading list. After two quick losses we were up against it, especially as Keith, Rob and Gary all had slightly worse positions. Gary gained a draw despite his awful pawn structure and Keith drew with the talented 10 year old. Ian then ground out a win and finally Rob turned his game around with both players in time-trouble and mated his opponent.
In the Kent League semi-final the team will be playing Snodland.
On 15th February the Harvey Cup team went to the top of the table with one match to play by defeating Chislehurst by 3.5 to 2.5.
With Dave and Don winning and Dennis and Keith drawing we only needed a draw to win the match; Gary had a winning position, but was short of time, so forced a draw to close out the match.
On 16th November the Harvey Cup team continued its successful run with a win by 3.5 to 2.5 over Petts Wood. Ian, Keith and Don won and Dave drew.
On 27th October the Harvey Cup team’s season started successfully with a win over Beckenham and Bromley by 4-2 after a much bigger win had seemed likely. Ian, Dennis and Don got the full point and Gary and Dave drew.
Congratulations to the Intro Cup team who defeated Petts Wood very convincingly 3.5 – 0.5 in the Intro Cup Final. Keith, Jack and Phil won and Jack drew.
Congratulations also to the Harvey Cup team, who defeated the Cranbrook team, Weald of Kent, 3.5 – 2.5 in a much closer match. Rob and Dennis won and Dave drew early on but Weald of Kent pinned us back and Ian needed to win the final game to finish, which he duly did.
This is the first time that Sidcup have won two trophies on Finals Day.
Our Intro Cup team has finished the season in second place in the Metropolitan section of the Kent League’s Intro Cup competition and will now play Medway or Snodland in the semi-final.
In the Harvey Cup, a win over Petts Wood maintains our 100% record with two matches to play.
The Intro Cup team finally played a match after weather forced the cancellation of the first match and the result was a 3-1 win over Lewisham with Ken Grist, Peter Houching and Phil Broughton all winning. So Peter’s first match as captain was successful and the club are still undefeated in all leagues this season, having won the first two Harvey Cup matches against Beckenham and Lewisham and drawn the first two Tom Fuller Cup matches against Petts Wood and Lewisham.
