Our second Stevenson Cup match was against Lewisham, who had much the stronger team after our top board had to drop out at the last minute.

Tony Packham was first to finish when he accepted a draw offer. Greg Edwards’ opponent then overlooked a trap which won Greg a piece and the game. The other games were all long. Rohit Vishwakarma felt he had walked into some opening preparation and eventually he was ground down. Dave Helps had a fighting game which was eventually drawn. Ian McAllan sacrificed the exchange early on and won a knight v rook ending where the knight took five pawns in seven moves. Lee Brockwell started well but his opponent came back into it. However Lee got into a knight ending a pawn up and when time was called offered a draw to win the match.
