After losing to Charlton 2.5 - 3.5 our Stevenson Cup side had to win or draw our last match against Lewisham to win the metropolitan section of the Stevenson Cup. It did not look promising when our top board was unavailable and we were heavily outrated on the night.

Dave Helps won, but losses on top and bottom boards made our position distinctly unpromising. When James Wagstaff drew, both the other two games had to swing our way. Ian McAllan managed to reach a drawn bishop ending a pawn down, so it came down to Tony Packham’s game. His opponent attacked a bishop, Tony ignored the threat and counter-attacked winning his game and drawing the match.
